A Spark of Faith – The ROI Was in the Overhead Bin

Flight Manual Revisions

By Kerry Frank  /  August 13, 2025

Do you believe in signs? This one changed everything. Let’s talk about trusting the nudge.

I had the product. The test flight was a success. But no CFO would sign the contract.

They weren’t just asking for ROI on my software, they wanted the numbers to justify the iPads too. At $600 a pilot, I couldn’t get there.  And when you’re a disruptor, you’re not just selling the future, you’re forced to solve every problem between here and there.

So we went to work. One of my team sat inside a regional airline calculating every penny spent on printing, binders, labels, shipping. The savings added up but not enough.

Here’s the part I almost missed:
I could’ve gotten stuck.
Stuck in frustration.
Stuck in self pity.
Stuck spinning on a problem that had no obvious solution. But I kept moving. And then it happened.

Over lunch one day, a friend casually mentioned:
“Did you hear Frontier removed the curtain between first class and economy?”

Why?
“They calculated the weight and fuel cost of that curtain. It was cheaper to remove it.”

I nearly dropped my fork. That was it.We weighed the flight bags the pilots were required to carry. Ran the fuel savings. Submitted the business case. The CFO signed without hesitation.

The breakthrough was never in the binder costs. It was in staying open long enough to let the unexpected answer arrive.

When we get stuck on the problem, we can’t hear the solution whispering.
When we keep showing up, listening, and moving, that’s when the curtain falls and the door opens.

“The most serious mistakes are not being made as a result of wrong answers. The true dangerous thing is asking the wrong question.”
